The off-season break presents the military side with an opportunity to correct their mistakes and plan for a better show in the new season
Ulinzi HC right back Gideon Mulwa has set his sights on winning a Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) double with the military side, and after coming short this season, hopes the 2025/26 term will bear good tidings.
The Kenya international has already achieved the feat with his former side, National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), but since his switch to the military side in 2020, the league title has remained elusive.

In 2023, the then Nixon Oyaro-coached side finally subdued perennial winners NCPB to lift the Cup title, the first since 2019.
Last year, the duo lost the Cup to Equity Bank HC, to begin their double hunt on a sour note, the millers regrouped to lift the league unbeaten, while Ulinzi placed fourth after losing three matches.
“We started the season well, picked crucial wins, but dropped the ball towards the end with losses to Equity, General Service Unit (GSU), and NCPB.
We had hoped for better results and a better outcome. However, we head back to the drawing board as we eye the Super Cup title and a good start to the new season,” Mulwa told Mozzart Sport.
Mulwa believes that, while they would have wanted a different outcome in the just-concluded season, the off-season break presents an opportunity for his team to correct their mistakes and plan for a better start, reclaiming the pre-season Cup competition.
“We went to the last Cup as champions, but some costly mistakes denied us back-to-back titles.
We have picked crucial lessons, and as we prepare for this year’s competition, we are keen to reclaim the title and carry the same form to the league, for the gong,” he explains.
At a personal level, the former St Paul’s player admits he had a difficult season, but in a quick rejoinder, promises to make a strong comeback and help the team clinch the double.
“Leaving NCPB for Ulinzi was a mix of securing my future and chasing a different challenge. I won the double in my single season with NCPB, and that is an achievement I am chasing with the military side as well.
The level of competition in the league is tough, and I have to be at my best, which I was not this season, to help the team achieve that,” he added.
His coach, Victor Ochieng, says the team is banking on the experience of players like Mulwa in their quest for the elusive league title, even as they continue their rebuilding process.
“He (Mulwa) is one of our standout players with a lengthy career ahead of him, and we are looking to rebuild the team around him and the likes of Kevin Imo in the coming seasons.
We have been recruiting and are hoping to reap the benefits in the new season,” Ocheing said.
The Super Cup is tentatively scheduled for August, paving the way for KHF’s first tiered league, with the top 12 finishers this season competing on a home-and-away basis. The rest of the teams are set to form a second-tier league.
